Team Information
Form a Team or Join a Team for The San Francisco Marathon Events!
Forming a team or joining a team for The San Francisco Marathon events is a great way to meet new people, set a healthy example, and promote team work. Whether you are forming a team with your co-workers, friends & family, joining a neighborhood team, or fundraising for a Cause to Run team – this is a great way to get active, meet new people and HAVE FUN while training for a marathon or half marathon!
It is simple to set up a team, and once you have setup your team, anyone can join your team when they register for the race!
How to Set Up Your Team:
- First, determine which team category you fall under. Learn more about the team categories and currently registered teams.
- Then, register yourself for one of The San Francisco Marathon events (if you are the Team Captain – the Team Captain must register first and then setup the team).
- Once you are registered for one of the races, then you can create your team.
- Your team will be assigned a team number – pass your team number and/or your team name on to your colleagues, friends, and/or family so they can sign up for your team!
- As Team Captain you will have the capability to send out emails to all team members – this is a great way to keep the team updated on training and team details.
How to Join an existing Team:
- If you haven't yet registered for one of The San Francisco Marathon events, you simply join the team during your registration process (it will ask you the team number - if you don't know it you can look it up on the registration form).
- If you are already registered for an event, you can still join a team! You first need to create your personal login page (on your personal page you can update your demographic information as well as join a team). To create your login page, go to: https://secure2.merchantcart.net/RunSFM/createlogin.cfm
- If you have already created your login page, then you just login to access your page at: https://secure2.merchantcart.net/runsfm/login.cfm
- Once in your personal login page you can add yourself to a team. Note that your personal login page also has a fundraising site where you can collect online doantions. If you are a member of a Cause to Run team, any donation you collects will go to that Cause to Run team. However, if you are just a member of any other team, then all donations you collect will automatically go to Youth Run4Fun, the RunSFM youth running non-profit organization.

Fun Team Ideas:
- Fundraise for a Cause: If you have formed a team in any of the divisions, you can still fundraise for a Cause. Just check out the Cause to Run organizations (at www.causetorun.com) and then contact us to let us know which organization your team would like to raise money for. Don't see your Cause? Contact us with the name of the organization you would like to see as a Cause to Run Team.
- Wear a Team T-Shirt: Create a fun team t-shirt for your team to wear during the race!
- Volunteer at a Water Stop: Recruit your friends and family to host a water stop. That way they will be out on the course with you, while also helping other runners! They can create signs to post at the water stop.
- Meet up at the post-race BBQ: Have your team meet up at the Post-Race BBQ to congratulate each other on finishing the race, and refueling your body after a nice long run!
Team Rules
- Team Captain will be responsible for all team management, communication, and will register the team online.
- Teams must consist of 5 or more members to be scored. You can set up your team with only the Team Captain registered, team members can be added later.
- Deadline to have all team members registered is: July 1, 2008, unless we have sold out by then.
- Team Names cannot be considered offensive or vulgar as judged by the RunSFM Staff.
- Teams must either be All-Male, All-Female, or Co Ed.
- Co Ed Teams must consist of at least one member of the opposite sex (and for judging/timing purposes at least one member of the opposite sex will be included in the timing).
- Teams must choose a category and follow all category rules. Categories are: Corporate Division, Running Club Division, Family, Friends, and Fun Division, Cause to Run, Military, or the Neighborhood Division.
- If your team plans to fundraise, Team Captain MUST email us and let us know the charity you wish to raise money for. We can then have a Staff Member add your team's fundraising capabilities. Click here to email us.
- Team Costumes and/or T-shirts may be worn on event weekend as long as they do not break any laws or inhibit event and runners.
