2008 RunSFM Seminar Series: Making the Most of Your Marathon

This year the keynote Seminar Series Speaker will be Bart Yasso, Chief Running Officer of Runner's World Magazine, who will be discussing his book "My Life on the Run"

Motivation and Race Day Preparation
9:30am - 10:00am
Julie Fingar, one of the top US Women Ultramararthoners, will talk about how to mentally prepare yourself to run a half or full marathon – and have fun while doing it!  She will also give you pointers on how to relax before the race, and how to stay energized throughout.  She will be available throughout the day at the Seminar Series to answer your questions.  She is also the host of the RunSFM Seminar Series.

Sports Medicine and the Marathon Runner
10:15am – 11:15am
Dr. Anthony Luke, from UCSF Sports Medicine will give an update on current concerns for runners, including hyponatremia and fluid management, and discuss cutting edge information on how to prevent common injuries encountered in running. Click here to learn more about Dr. Luke.

Bart Yasso’s “My Life on the Run”: The Wit, Wisdom, and Insights of a Road Racing Icon
11:30am – 12:30pm
Dubbed the "Mayor of Running," Bart Yasso is one of the best-known figures in the sport, but few people know why he started running competitively, how it changed his life, or how his brush with a crippling illness nearly ended his career a decade ago. With insight and humor, My Life on the Run chronicles the heatstroke and frostbite, heartache and triumphs he's experienced while competing in more than 1,000 competitive races during his nearly 30 years with Runner's World magazine.

A Marathoner’s Diet
12:45pm – 1:45pm
Kaley Todd, MS RD, a dietitian from UCSF, will be discussing all your nutritional needs from training to post race needs. She will outline the best way to maximize your performance and health throughout your marathon experience.

Ultra Marathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner
2:00pm – 3:00pm
Come listen to Dean Karnazes (www.Ultramarathon.com), Ultra Marathon Man and Official Host of The San Francisco Marathon™ share his stories of persistence and perseverance, as he has done what few people have thought humanly possible.  He’s set a world record by running 350 miles nonstop during The Relay.  He’s run 146 miles across Death Valley in the middle of summer, where temperatures reached 130 degrees.  He’s run a Marathon to the South Pole in negative 40-degree temperatures.  And, on several occasions, he’s run a 200-mile relay race solo, racing alongside teams of twelve.

TrainingWell
3:15pm – 4:15pm
After reviewing the physiology (normal function) and pathophysiology (deranged function) of muscles and joints during running (and walking), Dr. Jeff Shapiro will reveal a common sense running techinique proven to reduce injury and improve performance. A discussion of the science of nutrition, pharmaceuticals and supplements will enhance every athlete’s ability to train well.

Get the Inside Track on the San Francisco Marathon Course and Meet the Pace Group Leaders
4:30pm – 5:30pm
Learn more about the RunSFM Pace Team and meet the pacers who will be leading you to your marathon goal time.  The Pace Group Leaders will provide information on how the Pace Groups work, and where to meet your Pace Group Leader on race day.

Pace Group Leaders will also give you insider information about the marathon course..  They will provide tips to racing the terrain, alert you to any hazards in the course, and point out any landmarks or vistas you should be sure not to miss!
